SaunaBuilder: Calgary’s Leader in Custom Indoor, Outdoor, and Commercial Saunas

There’s something undeniably special about stepping into a sauna designed just for you, where every detail is thoughtful, and every element serves a purpose.

For over eight years, SaunaBuilder has been bringing that experience to life. Based in Calgary, we design and build custom indoor saunas, outdoor retreats, and commercial spa facilities for clients across Alberta: from city homes in Calgary to luxury lodges in Banff and cozy cabins in Canmore.  We also ship our handcrafted outdoor saunas across Canada and the U.S., so more people can enjoy the comfort of a well-built sauna, wherever they are.

We’ve built a lot of saunas, but we never stop learning. Every project teaches us something new. No two spaces are alike. No two clients are the same. That’s what keeps us engaged and why we approach each project with fresh eyes.

These are exciting times in Calgary. Saunas are no longer limited to cabins and spas – they’re becoming an essential part of how people design their homes and wellness spaces. Many dusty old basements are being converted into home gyms paired with custom saunas and cold plunges. En suites are being transformed into spa escapes, encompassing indoor saunas and steam showers, adding comfort, value, and a much-needed daily escape.

Commercial demand is growing too. In Calgary, Banff, and Canmore, health clubs, boutique hotels, and wellness studios are embracing saunas as a standout feature, drawing in guests and elevating the entire wellness experience.

Projects come in all shapes and sizes. No two spaces and no two clients are the same. There’s no script, no off-the-shelf solution, just a shared goal to create a sauna that fits its space, serves its purpose, and suits the people who will use it.

As demand continues to grow, so does the opportunity to explore smarter, more thoughtful sauna design. It’s a space that keeps evolving, shaped by new needs, unique settings, and fresh ideas. And there’s no formula. Instead, we listen, adapt, and work alongside you to find the right solution for your space.

Some of Our Commercial Sauna Projects in Calgary

We’ve been lucky to work on some standout projects right here in Calgary, each with its own purpose, pace, and set of challenges.

Eau Claire Athletic Club

Eau Claire Athletic Club is a members-only wellness and fitness destination located in Calgary’s historic Eau Claire YMCA building. Spanning over 100,000 square feet, the club brings together high-performance athletic facilities, advanced recovery therapies, and social spaces, all designed to support a modern, balanced lifestyle.

As part of the club’s 2,000 sq ft Nordic spa, we designed and built two custom saunas to support daily use while preserving the building’s historic character. The result is a spa space that feels both modern and timeless, seamlessly integrated into its original setting. The sauna sits alongside a full range of thermal and recovery features, including hot and cold plunge pools, steam rooms, a float tank, and quiet zones for rest.

The Nordic spa is part of a broader wellness offering that includes pools, a full gym, and recovery services. Members also enjoy a wellness café, rooftop patio, lounges, private work pods, and even golf and racing simulators. Eau Claire Athletic Club brings movement, restoration, and connection together under one roof.

Clear Nordic Spa

Clear Nordic Spa opened Calgary’s first silent, screen‑free wellness space, designed to reset the nervous system through focused rest.

We built the core sauna areas: cedar and infrared rooms, with clean design, smooth flow, and a calming atmosphere. The spa guides you through traditional hot–cold–rest cycles, featuring plunge pools, steam, dry and infrared saunas, and quiet recovery spaces. It’s intentionally stripped of distractions so you can fully immerse, recharge, and find clarity.

Kananaskis Nordic Spa

We were brought in to design and build two saunas at Kananaskis Nordic Spa: an 8-person retreat and one of Western Canada’s largest, with space for 30 guests. Both were inspired by the surrounding landscape, with custom cedar accents and panoramic windows that frame the mountains while maintaining privacy.

Built for year-round use, these saunas balance scale, durability, and atmosphere, designed to perform in a high-traffic, alpine setting.

Gold’s Gym

For Gold’s Gym, the focus was pure function: a sauna that stays comfortable, clean, and reliable through constant use, while still giving members a moment to recover after training.

Offline Wellness Club

Offline Wellness Club is Calgary’s first and largest screen-free social wellness space, created to help people disconnect from devices and reconnect with themselves and others. What began as a grassroots run group has evolved into a full-scale community rooted in real connection, recovery, and presence.

At the center is a large-group sauna, designed and built by SaunaBuilder, with space for over 30 people. Paired with individual cold plunge tubs, it anchors the club’s contrast therapy offering. The sauna supports both lively group sessions and quiet personal recovery, and is used for breathwork, mobility classes, and guided experiences.

This balance of social interaction and stillness defines the Offline approach. Music and conversation fill the space during peak hours, while quieter times offer a chance to reset. Guests can refuel with water, tea, coffee, and electrolytes, with a supportive team on hand throughout.
Whether it’s post-run recovery or a moment to unplug, Offline Wellness Club offers a modern, welcoming environment.

In Calgary’s vibrant wellness scene, commercial saunas often provide that first experience—the place where people discover how good it feels to slow down, sweat, and reset. That exposure matters. It sparks curiosity, builds awareness, and creates a deeper connection to the practice.

And once people feel the benefits, they want more. They want that same experience available any time, in their own space. That’s why residential sauna builds are on the rise, turning a one-time visit into a daily ritual.

We’re proud to be part of this growing movement, designing spaces that introduce people to the power of heat and recovery, and helping them bring it into their everyday lives. As more Calgarians, Banff visitors, and Canmore residents embrace saunas as part of their daily routine, what once felt like a luxury is becoming a natural part of life in Alberta.
